Anusol is an over-the-counter (OTC) ointment for treating hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus or rectum, and can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (in the tissues surrounding the anus). - Calcium phosphate
- Mineral oil

There are many OTC hemorrhoid products; ingredients vary, as do effectiveness and price. Zinc sulfate monohydrate, the main component in Anusol is used for wound healing. Zinc is an essential mineral, and it supports the immune, reproductive, and digestive systems. Calcium phosphate is a compound of the natural mineral calcium with inorganic phosphate anions.
Dosage Instructions
There is no specific dosage for Anusol; the patient uses as much or as little as he or she requires to obtain relief. The directions specify treatment periods of every 4 hours, and after every bowel movement.
The directions appear to be sufficient.
Cost and Guarantee
Anusol is not marketed under this name any longer in the United States; the ointment is not available here as well. Anusol suppositories are still sold in the United States, but the brand name has changed to Tucks. Tucks generally sells its hemorrhoid treatments in the form of medicated pads, instead of ointments.
Anusol is still sold in Canada; the price for a small tube is approximately $7.17.
There is no money back guarantee on this product that we could find.
Summary of Our Anusol Review
Benefits
- Easy to use
- Inexpensive
Concerns
- Availability
- No money back guarantee
Anusol is a long-standing brand, used for years by the general population. It is effective and inexpensive; the lack of a money back guarantee is not a real problem on such a long-established product. The availability of the product in the United States is a concern though; the ointment has essentially vanished from the shelves, but the suppositories are still around. You can find Anusol at Amazon.com, for those of you who shop online, and you may find it at other online sites as well, but it is not found at the big box retailers in the United States.
